The first Wednesday Walkers hike of the season took place on May 6 and was led by Preserve Steward Bill Claflin at the Pemaquid Watershed Association’s beautiful La Verna Preserve in Bristol.
The Wednesday Walkers, a walking and hiking group in the Midcoast, has expanded again this year. Hikes are now being led by a sponsoring group of 13 land trusts. Participating organizations are Boothbay Region Land Trust, The Chewonki Foundation, Coastal Mountains Land Trust, Damariscotta Lake Watershed Association, Damariscotta River Association, Georges River Land Trust, Hidden Valley Nature Center, Kennebec Estuary Land Trust, Medomak Valley Land Trust, Pemaquid Watershed Association, Lincoln County Historical Association, Sheepscot Valley Land Trust, and Sheepscott Wellspring Land Alliance.
Wednesday Walkers hike or walk every Wednesday morning from early May to late November, weather permitting. All the hikes are fully documented with a description or map. A typical hike is in the 2- to 4-mile range on trails maintained by a land trust organization. Hike leaders are land trust volunteers.
Walkers meet at the Friends Meeting House in Damariscotta on Wednesday morning, then carpool to the walk or hike destination. Meeting the group at the starting point is another option. Details, including the start time (usually between 8:30 and 10 a.m.), are emailed to the group by the hike leader a week ahead.
To receive emails about future hikes, or for more information or for help joining, email the Wednesday Walkers.
