Fireworks next summer are a go, the road race is shaping up, and souvenirs are ready to be ordered, say members of Whitefield’s Bicentennial Committee.
The volunteer group began 2009, the year of the town’s 200th birthday celebration, with progress reports.
Ron Kenoyer, who is organizing the Grand Army Hill 5K Road Race, presented a design of the T-shirts that will commemorate the Aug. 8 event. There will also be a one-mile fun run with prizes for kids 12 and under. There will be age categories for the longer race, also with prizes.
Kenoyer said he would need volunteers to help with the race, and Mike Shaw, who is in charge of souvenirs, said he too would need help selling tote bags, hats and other items.
The remaining 2009 historic calendars will be available at various venues at a reduced price.
A nature walk, hosted by the Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association and featuring entomologist Charlene Donohue of Whitefield, has been set for June 27 at the SVCA’s Salmon Preserve, Howe Rd.
Marie Sacks, reporting on the June 20 house tour, said she and architectural historian Christi Mitchell have narrowed down the prospects to five or six houses to visit. Sacks said there will be a booklet with pictures and architectural descriptions for those who participate.
Cathy Sell said planting a commemorative Liberty Elm on the town property, as previously pursued, is inadvisable because the land has been designated a building site for the new town center.
The committee’s next meeting is Wed., Feb. 18 at the townhouse, beginning at 7 p.m. All are welcome to attend, share ideas and volunteer their help.
