When a fire sparked behind the kitchen fireplace in a Whitefield home, fire crews from the surrounding towns responded quickly and contained the damage to a small patch of the exterior at the rear of the house. No one was injured.
The residents of 94 Main St. in Whitefield reported the fire at around 11 a.m. and by 11:15 a.m. it was contained.
“If they hadn’t been home, or if it had been at night and it had gone a few more minutes, it would have been significantly worse,” said Whitefield Fire Chief Tim Pellerin.
The fire started between the bricks behind the fireplace and the exterior of the home, Pellerin said. It did not spread to any other parts of the house.
Gayle White is renting the property with her family and said that they’ve had fires in that fireplace for the last two nights.
“We only moved in two days ago,” White said. “Then I woke up this morning and saw smoke.”
Fire crews from Whitefield, Jefferson, Somerville, Alna, and Windsor responded to the scene. Whitefield rescue crews and Delta Ambulance also responded.
