The walls on Whitefield’s fire station are up, and the roof sheathing should be on by Christmas.
Architectural designer Lynn Talacko, of Royal Barry Wills Associates, reported on progress by Catalano’s Construction to the board of selectmen Monday. “There’s a great carpentry crew,” Talacko said.
Once the building is closed in and it’s possible to heat the area, laying the concrete slab for a floor can begin.
Plans for the truck bays were originally larger, and the addition, where there will be office space, was about eight feet longer, Talacko said. The design was downsized to keep costs in check. Voters at March 2010 annual town meeting approved the $548,144 project.
In other business, Dennis Merrill, chair of the volunteer assessment advisory committee, said members had met with several state agencies. The committee was told “there’s a lot of relief” available to help property tax payers and that agricultural exemptions work well.
Merrill said Maine Revenue Services told him no one in Whitefield is using programs such as open space and farmland for tax relief.
The committee’s next meeting is Thurs., Dec. 23 starting at 9 a.m. in the town office.
