A Whitefield man was arrested in the early morning on Sept. 16 after he allegedly entered his neighbor’s home and threatened a couple with a shotgun before engaging in an extended standoff with police.
Police reported that after 39-year-old Peter Poland left his neighbor’s house around midnight, he returned to his own home at 208 Mills Rd.
Police arrived on scene shortly after midnight and, when Poland refused to come out of his house, the State Police tactical team was called in. The tactical team arrived on scene at around 2 a.m. and the standoff began. Sometime before 6 a.m., police entered Poland’s home and arrested him. No shots were fired, and no one was injured, police said.
Police seized the shotgun and an assortment of knives from Poland’s home.
Jail officials said Poland was booked at Two Bridges Regional Jail at 8:32 a.m. He is charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and trafficking in dangerous knives.
As of press time on Sept. 21, Poland had not posted bail, set at $5000 cash or $25,000 property.
