Wiscasset High School Principal Matt Carlson has resigned his post after just one year to become the principal of Georgetown Central School.
Carlson’s resignation was accepted with regret by the Sheepscot Valley Regional School Unit board at their July 14 regular meeting.
Though his tenure was brief, Carlson has the distinction of being the acting principal during the final contentious and controversial debate over the removal of the schools “Redskin” mascot.
The RSU #12 board voted in January to remove the moniker and charged a Carlson-led committee with finding a suitable replacement before the summer.
In May, Carlson presented a new mascot, the wolverine, to the board.
“You hate to see someone of Matt’s caliber go,” RSU #12 Asst. Superintendent Gary Rosenthal said. “He had his share of difficulties and handled them exceptionally well despite the political ramifications.”
Rosenthal said Carlson’s strong special education background would serve him well in his new position.
Carlson replaced former WHS principal Susan Poppish who retired in 2010.
RSU 12 is actively searching for a replacement ahead of the coming school year, which begins in September.
