A Wiscasset High School student faces a felony drug trafficking charge for allegedly attempting to sell an assortment of prescription drugs at the high school Friday, March 27.
The 14-year-old student was charged with aggravated trafficking in schedule W drugs, which is a class A felony because the alleged crime took place in the school, according to a Wiscasset Police Department press release.
Wiscasset High School Principal Cheri Towle was alerted the student may have stolen prescription drugs from a family member by the student’s father, according to the press release. The student’s backpack was searched by Towle and the school nurse.
They allegedly found a Pringles container with nine baggies of prescription pills labeled with pricing information. The baggies contained amitriptyline, cyclobenzaprine, diazepam, Endocet, lorazepam, OxyContin, tramadol, Tylenol 3, and Vicodin, priced from $3 to $25.
School Resource Officer Perry Hatch subsequently charged the student.
“I would like to commend the father of the juvenile for his quick and decisive action to contact the administration of the school,” Wiscasset Police Chief Troy Cline said in a press release. “Staff at Wiscasset (High School) should also be commended for their rapid response in locating and seizing the drugs.
“Everyone involved in this response helped to avert a potentially tragic and deadly situation had the drugs been sold or given to any of the students.”
The juvenile is scheduled for arraignment April 28 in Wiscasset.
