Brake failure is being blamed for a three-car accident on Main Street in Wiscasset on July 21 that sent four people to the hospital.
Emergency crews responded to an accident near Red’s Eats just after 3 p.m. Ann Sparks, 81, of Wiscasset, was traveling north on Route 1 when her Chevrolet Cavalier failed to stop and slammed into a white Kia SUV stopped in traffic. The SUV was pushed forward into a Jamboree recreational vehicle that was stopped for a pedestrian in the crosswalk.
Cline said an inspection of Sparks’ vehicle indicated the driver’s side rear brake line was leaking fluid, which caused the brakes to fail.
Sparks’ passenger, her 9-year-old great-grandson, was taken by the Wiscasset Ambulance Service to Mid Coast Hospital for treatment of a head injury. Cline said the boy had considerable swelling on the left side of his head. Sparks was also transported by ambulance, but Cline said she did not complain of injuries at the scene.
The driver of the Kia, Gordon Sundeen, 78, and his passenger, Roberta Sundeen, 68, both of Florida, were taken to the Miles Campus of LincolnHealth to be checked out.
The couple was reportedly having difficulty breathing, “which is standard with injuries from airbag deployment,” Cline said.
Cline said he did not think any of the injuries were life-threatening.
The driver of the RV, Mercedes Campillos Alonso, 59, and her passengers, Juan Diaz-Noriega Campillos, 17, and Jose Ernesto Diaz-Noriega Viccalba, 69, all of Spain, were not injured in the accident.
The RV, which sustained minimal damage in the accident, was able to be driven from the scene. Viccalba said the RV was rented in Canada and the family was planning to vacation in the area. Both the other vehicles had to be towed from the scene.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and the Wiscasset Fire Department assisted at the scene.
