Wiscasset Municipal Airport has been awarded a $123,693 federal transportation fund grant for a snow removal equipment building.
At its Feb. 3 meeting Wiscasset’s board of selectmen gave the green light to the municipal airport manager to apply for the grant. At the same meeting, the board opened sealed bids for construction of the facility.
Airport manager Ervin Deck said the Federal Aviation Agency grant would require a 2.5 percent matching fund from the town and the state.
Wiscasset’s grant was part of a total $3,091,480 awarded to Maine for aviation projects throughout the state.
Maine’s U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collin announced the Dept. of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration grants in a joint statement last week.
“Maine’s transportation infrastructure must be maintained and improved in order to keep residents connected to people and economies all over the world,” Senators Snowe and Collins said. “The most recent funding from the Department of Transportation has been provided to airports across the state for necessary upgrades and developments.”
Other airports in Maine receiving FAA grants include $1.5 million for the Portland International Jetport to begin phase one of runway safety improvements; $600,000 to Dexter Regional Airport for runway rehabilitation; $460,000 to Bangor International Airport to help develop an interactive training system for operations and safety staff as well as improve the cargo apron and $200,000 to Northern Aroostook Regional Airport in Frenchville, also to be used to build a snow removal equipment building.
