A small but enthusiastic group of Wiscasset Chamber of Commerce members, Wiscasset selectmen, town officials, and curious residents turned out for a ribbon cutting ceremony June 23 for a new Chamber-run visitor information center on Rt. 1.
“It was truly an uprising of merchants that brought made this chamber a reality,” said Chamber Chairperson Chris Dilts, owner of the Newkirk Inn. “It’s the efforts of many that made this possible and I’m proud to say we’re at 100 members and growing.”
The modest building is located next to Avalon Antiques on the northbound side of Rt. 1 in Wiscasset and features brochures and information for Chamber merchants in Wiscasset, Edgecomb, and Alna.
Members hope the kiosk will serve as an instructive gateway to the many businesses in the area and pump much needed revenue into the town before people scatter to the various peninsulas of Lincoln County,
According to chamber member Sherry Dunbar, the group has come a long way since its initial meeting in October 2010.
“We’re getting close but still have a ways to go,” said Dunbar. “The chamber has done a lot in the little time we’ve been together.”
Dunbar said the kiosk would be staffed with volunteers and open through October.
“We still need volunteers,” said Dunbar. “The support has been excellent so far but we rely on our members to keep the momentum going.”
