During a ceremony on Thursday, May 9 in the Hall of Flags at the Maine Capitol, Wiscasset Elementary School teacher Becky Hallowell was named Lincoln County Teacher of the Year.
The ceremony, which came at the end of Teacher Appreciation Week, honors one teacher from each of Maine’s 16 counties.
Hallowell is the second teacher from the Wiscasset School District to be given this honor in the last three years. Wiscasset Elementary School teacher Trae Stover was named Lincoln County Teacher of the Year in 2022.
Hallowell, who has been teaching for 29 years, said she always knew she would be a teacher.
“My family is filled with teachers: my mother, sister, aunts, and cousins teach, so we joke teaching must be genetic,” Hallowell said. “I always knew I wanted to teach because I love kids and I love learning.”
Before coming to Wiscasset, Hallowell taught at Whitefield Elementary School for 11 years. During that time, she was able to watch her sons learn from her “talented colleagues.”
Hallowell has taught in Wiscasset for 10 years. She started out as a kindergarten teacher, and she now teaches fourth grade.
“Teaching allows me to be creative and inspire tomorrow’s plumbers, artists, doctors, and policymakers. It’s a huge responsibility, but it’s also a joyful experience,” she said.
Hallowell said being named the Lincoln County Teacher of the Year is exciting.
“This honor allows me to highlight the wonderful work happening across the schools of Lincoln County,” she said.
Hallowell said she will be striving to advocate for the teaching profession, and that working alongside the other 15 county teachers of the year is an exciting prospect.
“Together we will strive to lift up all of Maine’s teachers and students. It’s going to be an incredible year,” she said.
