Drew James Bibber, formerly of Wiscasset, led police on a lengthy chase through a marsh, a creek and across busy streets before he was arrested.
Arcata police were notified by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office early Friday morning that Bibber was known to be in the Arcata area with a converted yellow school bus, according to a release Friday from the Arcata Police Department.
Bibber was wanted on a 2012 warrant for failing to appear in Wiscasset Superior Court, officials at the Lincoln County Communications Center said Saturday.
At about 1 p.m. Friday, police located the school bus and began to search the area, spotting Bibber, who was barefoot, as he left an area business and allegedly fled when his name was called.
Bibber allegedly led officers on a nine-block foot chase through Arcata Marsh, across streets with heavy traffic, through a creek and several backyards.
Eventually Bibber grabbed an unaccompanied bicycle and fled until officers boxed him in, after which Bibber reportedly ran into another backyard, where he was taken into custody at gunpoint, according to the release.
In March 2012, Bibber failed to appear in Wiscasset Superior Court for sentencing in connection to a Class B theft in Boothbay Harbor in August 2010, the Bangor Daily News reported at the time.
Bibber was one of three suspects who stole a large number of items from Enchantments, a boutique in Boothbay Harbor, then drove to Detroit, Mich., trying to sell the items along the way.
Bibber initially was charged with burglary and theft but only was convicted of theft.
Officials from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office have begun the extradition process to return Bibber to Maine.
