A Wiscasset man waived his right to a grand jury indictment and pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, a class B felony, for strangling his former girlfriend in June.
Jason H. Cloukey, 40, of Wiscasset, was sentenced to five years with all but nine months suspended and three years of probation on Sept. 28 in Lincoln County Superior Court. As part of his probation conditions, he must have no contact with the victim and undergo mental health counseling.
According to the complaint, Cloukey did “intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly cause bodily injury … under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life.”
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in the early evening of June 2 in Wiscasset, Deputy Ryan Chubbuck wrote in an affidavit. According the affidavit, Cloukey woke up, grabbed the victim from the rear, and chocked her to the point where she could not breathe.
The victim kicked a table in the bedroom to get the attention of people upstairs, Chubbuck wrote. Strangulation marks were visible on the victim’s neck and she was transported to Mid Coast Hospital for treatment.
Cloukey had an outstanding warrant from West Bath for failure to appear at the time of the incident.
