On a normal day, approximately 350,000 gallons of water go through the Wiscasset Waste Water Treatment Plant, according to Superintendent Bill “Buck” Rines. On Sept. 30, the meter read 2,000,000 gallons.
The onslaught of rain, causing many areas in Lincoln County to flood, resulted in the manhole cover at the intersection of Railroad Ave. and Route 1, just below Red’s Eats, to, “pop off,” Rines said.
The last time Rines could remember a manhole being pushed out of place due to an onslaught of rainfall was 20 years ago.
“There was just too much water in the pipes,” he said. Despite a coastal flood warning, the Wiscasset Waste Water Treatment Plant, itself, was not in danger of flooding, Rines said.
By 2:45 p.m., the tide was heading out, rainfall had slowed, and the worst was over. “I’m glad it let up,” Rines said.
