One Wiscasset man has made bail and another remains behind bars after being arrested and charged in an apparent home invasion that took place April 1 in East Boothbay.
Justin Jones, 20, and Joseph Harrison, 24, both of Wiscasset were arrested and charged with aggravated assault, burglary and theft after allegedly breaking into another man’s Samoset Trail home Thursday afternoon.
According to Gerald Mitkus of the Boothbay Police Dept., a call came in at 2:36 p.m. to assist Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) deputies after a man reported he had been assaulted. Mitkus said the man gave a description of vehicles operated by his assailants. They allegedly broke into the victim’s house, assaulted him and stole money.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office authorities would not release the victim’s name, but said he was taken to St. Andrew’s Hospital and later released.
Law enforcement officials from the Wiscasset Police Dept. and LCSO anticipate separate charges for the previous (March 31) day’s assault, as they believe the pair of assailants attacked the same man the day before in Wiscasset.
“He received pretty significant injuries the night before,” LCSO Lt. Rand Maker said, adding it was difficult to determine which injuries the man received from each attack.
He said the case is under investigation and officials are trying to determine why the man was assaulted two days in a row.
On April 2, Jones posted the $100,000 cash or property bail amount and left Two Bridges Regional Jail where he and Harrison had been held since the April 1 incident. Harrison remains at the jail with two separate bail amounts each for $150,000 cash or property, for a total of bail amount of $300,000, according to a jail spokesperson.
According to LCSO Sgt. Jason Nein, the District Attorney’s Office is contemplating additional charges of robbery, a Class A felony, against Jones and Harrison. The charges of burglary and assault are Class B felonies, while theft is a misdemeanor crime.
The whole matter will be presented by the District Attorney’s office to the grand jury in Lincoln County Superior Court at the end of the month, Nein said.
