Wiscasset Parks and Recreation Department is currently raising funds to build a public ice rink on the community playground.
Wiscasset Parks and Recreation Director Todd Souza said the ice rink will host a variety of community-hosted theme and family nights on the weekends, with a bonfire and hot chocolate for people to warm up after skating.
“There’s going to be fun activities where kids can play and parents can have an affordable night out,” Souza said.
While he wouldn’t rule out the possibility that the rink could be used for private functions, Souza said the purpose of the project was to provide a free place for the community to skate.
“Our focus right now is for the community to have it open for free skating,” he said.
The 67 by 115 foot rink (for reference, a standard NHL rink is 85 by 200 feet) will be located on the softball diamond at the Wiscasset Community Playground Facility, where it will be illuminated by the field’s lights.
The Parks Department is currently in the process of purchasing the liner and boards for the rink. The boards will initially be 12-inch wood frames that will eventually be replaced with more durable plastic sides. Half the boards have been donated by Hancock lumber, with the remainder to be purchased at employee price. Once the boards are purchased, Souza said the focus will turn to purchasing a liner.
“We’re doing it piece by piece, “Souza said.
According to Souza, $3600 needs to be raised to complete the project. $780 has so far been raised from private donations and a variety of area businesses.
Souza said a sponsor board will eventually be placed at the new rink to recognize everyone who helped and donated.
Several events are planned in the coming months to help raise funds, including dances and community suppers. Individual donations are also welcome.
“We’re looking for all ways to raise funds,” Souza said.
While no date has been set for the rink to be completed, Souza hopes to have it finished as soon as possible.
“Our goal is sooner than later,” he said.
