Wiscasset Police Reserve Officer Donald H. Smith Jr. passed away unexpectedly at his home in Wiscasset Jan. 7.
In a press release confirming Smith’s passing, Wiscasset Police Chief Troy Cline called Smith a hero and extended the department’s condolences to Smith’s family. Cline said Wiscasset Police and other Lincoln County public safety agencies intend to work closely with Smith’s family to assure Smith receives a fitting farewell.
Cline said Smith had proven himself to be an exemplary citizen and officer for the town.
“Everyone in the Wiscasset PD family and the community is feeling the loss, especially his fellow officers (with whom) he worked with side by side.
“The Wiscasset Police Department will support all of our officers, many of whom will take a long time to recover from this traumatic event,” Cline said. “But we will support each other through these difficult times.”
Smith served Wiscasset in various public safety related roles for more 30 years. In addition his work with the police department, where he was a member of the department’s Crisis Response team, Smith served as a volunteer firefighter with the Wiscasset Fire Department in the 1990s and was a past assistant director of and emergency medical technician with the Wiscasset Ambulance Service. He also worked as a corrections and transport officer for the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
“The Wiscasset Police Department mourns the tragic loss of our brother, Donnie,” Cline said.
