New appointments dominated Wiscasset School Board business on May 22, as the board filled 11 positions for the new school system, including the appointment of Wiscasset Primary School’s principal and the system-wide curriculum director.
Mona Schlein was hired to take on the principal’s role at the Wiscasset Primary School and Patricia Watts has accepted the part-time position of curriculum director. Schlein has been sharing the principal duties this past year with Watts, who resigned in March.
Schlein, a veteran Wiscasset Primary School teacher, has also been serving the school as a literacy specialist.
Watts served as RSU 12’s assistant superintendent and curriculum director for two years. This year she has served as both the Wiscasset Primary School principal and the district-wide curriculum coordinator.
Other appointments approved include: Michelle Benner, Wiscasset Primary School Title 1 literacy; Holly Morgan, high school resource room teacher; John Merry, director of maintenance and transportation; Lori Johnson, food service director; Stacy Lynn Rouleau, Wiscasset Middle School, English language arts; Holly Morgan, Wiscasset Primary School, self-contained special education; and Stacey Souza, superintendent’s administrative assistant.
Word on the new Wiscasset Middle School principal is expected soon as interim Superintendent Wayne Dorr told the board he has selected two finalists and plans on meeting with the board next week to discuss his decision.
Dorr told the board early numbers indicate kindergarten enrollment is up to 46 students, which could mean an additional kindergarten teacher will be necessary next year.
The board also decided it will hire another interim superintendent to replace Dorr, whose contract ends July 1, while talks continue about the possibility of joining another school district.
The superintendent search committee will go through a list of interim superintendents provided by the Maine School Management Association and report back to the board.
Dorr said he would be willing to extend his contract until Aug. 1 if the board needs him to, but said he is not interested in committing to anything beyond that.
The school board will meet June 11 to swear in its new members, elect officers and participate in a Maine School Management Association board training workshop.
“You did a lot of work tonight,” Dorr told the board. “Thank you.”
