Wiscasset shop owner Heather Peaslee said so many people have helped her and her four children through a very difficult winter, and she wants to give back some of the kindness that was shown to her.
Through the generosity of people in the community, Peaslee’s home was heated this winter and her children were able to have a Christmas.
“It blew me out of the water,” Peaslee said.
Peaslee, the owner of Livy Lane Clothing Exchange on Water Street in Wiscasset, is offering a Vera Bradley purse set, valued at $144, to the winner of her Random Acts of Kindness Contest.
Community members are encouraged to start thinking about others by doing something nice for someone and share with Peaslee for a chance to win the Vera Bradley purse package.
To enter the contest, simply post the act of kindness on the Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/livylaneclothingexchange or stop by the store to tell Peaslee about it in person.
Recipients of kindness, generally feel good and will likely do something nice to someone else in return, “It’s a snowball effect really,” she said.
Peaslee said she and her staff, which is her four children, will read all the acts of kindness and pick a winner. The winner will be announced May 10, just in time for Mother’s Day.
Peaslee said she hopes having her children help judge the entries will be inspired them to do nice things for people.
The contest is off to a good start. Acts of kindness showing up on Peaslee’s Facebook page include baking cookies to brighten someone’s day; babysitting for a sick mom, picking up trash on a walk, helping to pay someone’s bill and buying coffee for someone in line at a drive-through.
While interviewing Peaslee, May 2, she received a messaged from someone who spent half her social security check to help a friend buy a dog from the shelter, because this friend had been so saddened by the death of a dog.
“Why wouldn’t I want to do this,” Peaslee said. “Kindness makes the world a better place.”
