Wiscasset has fallen back to 11th place in its bid to be named one of America’s “Ten Coolest Small Towns,” and the only way to take back 10th place (or better) is for as many people as possible to register their votes before the contest ends Fri., Feb. 11, according to Wiscasset Town Manager Laurie Smith.
Wiscasset had been holding the line at No. 10 for some time, but Greensburg, Kan., was able to gain the votes to slip into the top ten over the weekend.
In order to vote, visit the Budget Travel website at www.budgettravel.com/bt-srv/coolestsmalltowns/CST2011.html. Once there, one can choose Wiscasset from the map and then cast a ballot. Voting will continue until Feb. 11.
A very important note – the rules allow individuals to vote every five hours, according to Smith.
Recognition as one of America’s “Ten Coolest Small Towns” could prove to be a boon to Wiscasset and surrounding areas because the contest is hosted by Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel, a nationally circulated magazine published by Newsweek. Such recognition would bring a great deal of attention to the area.
As of press time, that recognition was still 361 votes away with Wiscasset at 8603 votes, just behind Greensburg, Kan., with 8963.
The current numbers show a disturbing trend from the count on Monday, when Wiscasset held 7814 votes to Greensburg’s 8135, at a difference of 321 votes.
The numbers between Monday and press time Tuesday night show a steady trend of Greensburg gaining votes, which if it continues, could seal Wiscasset’s fate at 11th place – which is as good as 100th place when you need to be in the top 10.
“Now is the time to start pushing our way back into that 10th place spot, or even higher,” said Smith. “We only have a few days to do it!”
Out in Greensburg, Kan., Mark Anderson, the editor of the Kiowa City Signal, indicated that they’ve already left Wiscasset behind. “Actually we’ve now set our sights on Ripon, Wis., for ninth place,” he said in an email. Hmmmm….
The Lincoln County News website will continue to follow the progress of Wiscasset in America’s “Ten Coolest Small Towns” and post updates here as they become available.
