At the end of Community Cleanup Day at Wiscasset Speedway on Sept. 16, owners Richard and Vanessa Jordan chose to hold the Speedway’s first and only race of 2012 on Sat., Oct. 20.
Throughout the day, about 150 volunteers pitched in by collecting hundreds of discarded tires, painting trim on the buildings, mowing, and doing a variety odd jobs and repairs to get the property ready for the upcoming race.
Following the cleanup, the Jordans met with a group of about 40 drivers and other enthusiasts to discuss ideas for the race they plan to hold this fall.
Vanessa Jordan started the meeting by thanking all the people who helped out with the cleanup, and said that the enthusiasm of the participants was contagious.
“Without you, this would not be possible,” said Jordan.
Richard Jordan said that it was going to take the efforts of many people to make the Speedway run like it used to.
Dale Chadbourne, who organized last fall’s race at the track with Tony True, will be helping the Jordans with the upcoming race, said Vanessa Jordan.
Chadbourne said that if they have as many classes of cars as they did last year, it’s going to be a very long race day.
The Jordans are asking drivers to register ahead of time to help organize which car classes everyone will be in, and everyone will get to race.
Drivers whose classes have few participants will be placed in a similar class and the scoring will be weighted, said Vanessa Jordan. Trophies will be given as prizes for the winners.
Volunteers are needed to help out with the many different needs of the event in order for it to run smoothly, said Chadbourne.
There will be a $5 donation to attend the all-day event, which will help cover operating expenses for the race and help fund repairs that the raceway will require, said Jordan.
“Our first goal is to get the property back to how it used to be,” said Jordan.
The rain date for the race is Sun., Oct. 21. More details will be posted on the website (www.wiscassetraceway.info) as they become available.
