The town of Wiscasset has filed a lawsuit against Mason Station, LLC in an effort to recover $846,263.67 in unpaid property and personal property taxes, according to court documents.
The suit was filed with the Lincoln County Superior Court on Dec. 7.
According to an affidavit signed by Shari Fredette, Wiscasset’s treasurer and tax collector, Mason Station, LLC has failed to pay the amount due the town in taxes assessed from April 1, 2007 to April 1, 2012.
Only $152.53 of the total is due from personal property taxes and the rest is from property taxes, according to the affidavit.
The town of Wiscasset is being represented by James Belleau and Bryan Dench, both of Skelton, Taintor and Abbott of Auburn, according to court documents.
Wiscasset has already acquired 76 of 85 parcels once owned by Mason Station, LLC that were a part of the proposed Point East Maritime Village off of Birch Point Road, according to town documents.
The 76 parcels makes up 14.32 acres with a total assessed value of $6,518,100, according to the documents.
The town put out a request for proposals on the development of those tax-acquired properties in July 2012 but no completed proposals have been received to date, Town Planner Misty Parker said in a telephone conversation on Dec. 31.
“Because of the situation with the past development, the town is interested in entertaining the highest and best use for the property,” Parker said. “That can mean a number of things, so I think it’s pretty open what they’re looking for.”
The Board of Selectmen hasn’t clarified whether or not they would like the properties to remain together or be sold separately, Parker said. “The select board is willing to entertain any serious proposal of what could be done with the property.”
Attempts to reach Mason Station, LLC were unsuccessful by press time.
