For six years, Christine Wolfe has worked as the Wiscasset Town Clerk registering motor vehicles, issuing hunting, shellfish, and liquor licenses, registering voters, and organizing elections, among other tasks.
Wolfe submitted her letter of resignation on June 10 to take a new position as Freeport’s Town Clerk. Wolfe’s last day at the Wiscasset Town Office will be Friday, June 26. She will begin her new position the following Monday.
“This is a career move and it is such an opportunity,” Wolfe said. According to Wolfe, for years her career goal has been to work as a municipal official in a town run by a town council and town manager.
“I was looking for a place to retire from,” Wolfe said. “Hopefully, this will be my last career move.”
Wolfe began her career as a municipal official in Dresden in 2006 where she worked as deputy clerk, clerk, and tax collector. When the town clerk position became available in Wiscasset, she applied unsure if she would be hired.
Wiscasset was looking for someone with five years experience and Wolfe only had three. Town Manager Arthur Faucher, however, felt Wolfe was the best person for the job. Wolfe began working as the town clerk in 2009.
“I really want to thank him for the opportunity,” Wolfe said. “I’ve learned so much here.”
Working with Town Manager Laurie Smith, “was a career changing experience for me,” Wolfe said in her resignation letter. “She was such amentor to me,” Wolfe said. According to Wolfe, Smith helped her grow both personally and professionally.
One of Wolfe’s most memorable experiences was the 2013 town planner budget recount. The budget passed by a single vote, and the recount affirmed the election results Wolfe originally reportedwere accurate.
“It was nice affirmation that we do things right,” Wolfe said.
Wolfe credits Smith with instilling the confidence in her that allowed her to take a chance and seek out a new professional opportunity at 50.
In her new position, Wolfe will be performing many of the same tasks she currently performs. Freeport recently began registering motor vehicles, an area Wolfe is well versed in.
Wolfe will also be responsible for compiling information packets for Freeport’s town council.
“Chris has been a great pleasure to work with in the short time I have had to work with her,” Town Manager Marian Anderson
said. “This is a wonderful career opportunity for her.”
Not being able to exercise at the Wiscasset Community Center is one of the pitfalls Wolfe cited in leaving her current position. “The community center is an incredible place. They were instrumental in helping me lose 50 pounds. Now I have to find a new gym,” she said.
However, Wolfe she is excited for the next phase of her career. “Nothing ventured, nothing gained,” Wolfe said.
