Calling it an important issue for the town, Wiscasset Town Manager Laurie Smith is urging residents to vote Tues., Dec. 7 to decide the fate of the municipal planning budget.
Voters are being asked to appropriate a budget of $29,576.20 that will reduce the weekly hours of the town planner from the current 40 to 30. If approved, the adjusted budget will support the towns planning department for the last six months of the fiscal year.
Voters have twice rejected a 40 hour a week budget for the position, currently held by Jeffrey Hinderliter, but did approve 3 ½ months of last year’s budget to finance the department through this Dec. 31. Town officials view the vote as critical as Wiscasset explores economic growth opportunities and a business friendly environment.
“The town needs a planner. It’s an important component of the future of the town,” said Wiscasset Selectman Ed Polewarczyk.
In addition to assisting the planning board, the department also provides support for local businesses and potential developers. With a priority list of ordinances due to be completed in January 2011, the absence of a town planner would significantly delay the process and the timeline would not be met.
Though serving in an informal advisory role, Hinderliter has been supportive of a recent effort by Wiscasset merchants to form a formal chamber of commerce.
“I hope people understand the crucial role a planning department has. It’s vital,” said Polewarczyk.
Polls will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tues., Dec. 7 at the Wiscasset Community Center.
