During the Aug. 23 Wiscasset Withdrawal Committee meeting, RSU 12 Board Chairman Hilary Holm announced new cost allocation formula meetings Aug. 28 at Wiscasset High School and in advance of the meetings, gave a thumbnail sketch of what the new formula would entail.
The new formula, according to Holm, is on cost-per-student basis, with the total net operating cost divided by the total number of subsidy-eligible students in the RSU.
As an example, Holm presented a hypothetical budget of $25,000,000. In this example, she said state reimbursed debt service would be $2,000,000, creating a net operating cost of $23,000,000.
If the total number of subsidizable students was 2300, the total district’s cost per student would be $10,000. If a town has 400 students, that town’s cost would be $4,000,000.
Fuller details and methodology will be discussed at the three cost sharing Tuesday evening meetings, all at 7 p.m., on Aug. 28 at Wiscasset High School; on Aug. 30 in Windsor School’s cafeteria; and, on Sept. 5 at the Somerville School.
The new cost sharing formula only takes effect if voted in by simple majority at the November election, and would apply in the 2013-14 school year.
