Sen. David Trahan’s emergency wolf hybrid legislation is on its way to the governor’s desk.
The Maine House of Representatives joined the State Senate in passing L.D. 11, “An Act to Regulate the Keeping of Wolf Hybrids,” May 11.
The bill awaits the signature of Gov. Paul LePage. The bill’s sponsor, Sen. David Trahan (R-Waldoboro) expects him to sign it within a week. As an emergency bill, it would take effect immediately thereafter.
The bill would impose several new restrictions on hybrid ownership and institute penalties for violations.
Trahan has said the bill will make hybrid ownership prohibitively difficult and expensive.
Trahan aimed the bill at the Wolf Ledge Refuge, a hybrid sanctuary in Bristol. Jim Doughty, the founder and president of the sanctuary, has said he’ll comply with the bill while continuing with his plans for the organization.
