A 30-year-old woman was struck in her left eye by a firework over the holiday weekend in Jefferson, according to Sgt. Ken Grimes of the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Krystal Gagne was at her father’s home when a “pyrotechnic cake” tipped over and one of the shots hit her in the eye, Grimes said.
A “cake” is a multi-shot package with a number of individual tubes inside, Grimes said. A user lights one fuse and the device continues shooting until it works its way through all of the tubes, he said.
After the accident, Gagne was first taken to LincolnHealth – Miles Campus in Damariscotta and then transported by LifeFlight helicopter to a Boston hospital, Grimes said.
Grimes was not sure which hospital Gagne was taken to, nor what her town of residence was.
There was no crime or violation involved in the incident, Grimes said.
“They were being used legally, just for whatever reason the cake tipped over,” he said.
There was a similar incident which occurred in Friendship, Grimes said.
“In the 2-3 day span over the weekend, … our office handled over 50 incidents, but not all of those are injury-related,” Grimes said. “Obviously some are enforcement actions, some are inspections, but we did have a busy weekend.”
