Stephen Busch grew up in 1950s Norwalk, Conn. with interests in both creative pursuits and the sea. As a youth, his interest in art and painting was overshadowed by a thirst for the sea life, satisfied early on by sailing and racing with friends on Long Island Sound.
He pursued studies at the State University of New York Maritime College, after which he sailed the world in the merchant marine, coming ashore as a captain. He began taking evening art classes, but it was not until 1994 that he had the time to take up painting seriously. In 1999, after sailing his ketch to Maine over the course of three summers, Busch and his wife settled in South Bristol, where he established his studio.
His knowledge of ships, ship construction and his abiding respect for the sea has influenced and is evident in many of his paintings, and he has an avid interest in maritime history. Although he paints maritime themes primarily, his work also encompasses broader subject matter that reflects a love and understanding of nature.
Busch often paints in a narrative form, striving to draw viewers into his paintings with a sense of the mysterious, as in “The Intruder,” where the viewer must speculate on the outcome.
A plein air as well as studio painter, Busch is inspired by memories of his time at sea, notes from his navigation journals, and imagining how a scene might have appeared, as informed by his own experiences.
Come to the library during the month of March to view Busch’s paintings. The exhibit officially opens Friday, March 3, from 4-6 p.m. at the library, 2000 Route 129 in South Bristol. Light refreshments will be served. Hours are Wednesday and Thursday from 12-6 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call 644-1882 or find RutherfordLibraryME on Facebook.
