UMaine faculty and students study the Damariscotta River, the Gulf of Maine, and the world’s oceans at the Darling Marine Center. Join us for a walking tour of our waterfront laboratories and learn about current research projects focusing on lobster ecology and fisheries management, shellfish aquaculture, remote sensing, coastal food webs, and ocean acidification. Spectrum Generations Coastal Community Center, 521 Main Street in Damariscotta will host its weekly Lunch and Learn program on Wednesday, July 27 at 11:15 a.m. Following the luncheon Laura Fortman, Deputy Administrator, Wage and Hour Division, US Department of Labor will be the Coastal Center’s July 27 Lunch and Learn speaker. Her topic will be homecare regulations and the department’s new “Guide for Consumers and Family Members.”

Luncheon Reservations are required. Please call 563-1363 by noon on Monday, July 18 to make your luncheon reservation (Chicken Fricassee). For those 60 years of age and over the suggested donation is $5.00 per person. For all other community members Coastal’s lunch and learn program is an affordable dining choice at $6.00 per person.

On Wednesday afternoon, July 27, 2:00 p.m. at Spectrum Generations Coastal Community Center, 521 Main Street in Damariscotta join local iris gardener Louise Hardina for a conversation about iris culture. Based upon her experience, Louise will offer simple tips for planting, dividing and maintaining iris in your garden patch.

Participation Fee: $5. Just in time for late summer planting, register for Louise’s how-to-grow, maintain and divide bearded iris workshop call 563-1363. Workshops and classes at the Coastal Community Center are open to community members across all generations. No membership fee or age requirements just the desire to expand one’s horizons.

The walls of the Damariscotta River Grill in downtown Damariscotta will soon feature summer-themed art capturing the light and beauty of Midcoast Maine, as part of the restaurant’s ongoing Art at the Grill series. From 4-5:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 27, the public can meet the creators of the artwork – Kimberly Skillin Traina, Susan Tilton Pecora, and Susan Zimmerman – and enjoy some delicious light summer hors d’oeuvres upstairs in the restaurant’s bar area.

Noelle Granger will read from and discuss the latest book in the Rhe Brewster Mystery Series – Death By Pumpkin – set in the fictional sea-side town of Pequod, Maine…

A native of Plymouth, Massachusetts, N.A. GRANGER is a Professor Emerita at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. After forty years of research and teaching undergraduates and medical students, Dr. Noelle Granger decided to turn her knowledge of human anatomy to the craft of mystery writing. It’s clear through Granger’s writing that her career in science and anatomy laid the foundation for her second act as a writer. She doesn’t shy away from anatomical details of murder scenes and autopsies, and she clearly delights in transferring her knowledge to a captive, suspense-bound audience. Dr. Granger has also written for Deep South and Sea Level magazines and the Bella Online Literary Review, and has been featured in Chapel Hill Magazine, The News & Observer, and other local press. Granger lives with her husband, a cat who blogs, and a hyperactive dog in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She spends a portion of every summer in Maine. David Gans, a California native whose musical roots stretch deep into the history of the Northern California music scene, will be performing locally at The Little Brown Church on Route 32 in Round Pond at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 27.

Showcasing his journalistic efforts, Gans will be at Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop at 158 Main St., Damariscotta at 1 p.m. on the day of his performance, signing copies of his newly released book, “This is All a Dream we Dreamed: An Oral History of the Grateful Dead.” Gans is host of the weekly radio show “Tales from the Golden Road” on SiriusXM and the nationally syndicated “Grateful Dead Hour.”

The venue is open seating (church pews), with ticket sales occurring on the day of the show beginning at 7 p.m. The suggested admission is $12.
