Along with a terrific period drama this week, we once again are showing the broadcast of the tennis finals, live from Wimbledon, on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Strawberries and cream, anyone?
With a new iPhone, an apartment near the Grove, and a comfortable bank account left to her by her beloved late husband, Marnie Minervini (played by Susan Sarandon) has happily relocated from New Jersey to Los Angeles to be near her daughter Lori, a successful (but still single) screenwriter, and smother her with motherly love. But when the dozens of texts, unexpected visits, and conversations dominated by unsolicited advice force Lori to draw strict personal boundaries, Marnie finds ways to channel her eternal optimism and forceful generosity to change the lives of others — as well as her own — and find a new purpose in life. “The Meddler” transcends its cutesy title and familiar premise with a heartfelt look at family dynamics that is honored by a marvelous performance from Sarandon. Final screenings: 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., Thursday, July 7.
A delightful period drama adapted from a novel by Jane Austen. Beautiful young widow Lady Susan Vernon (Kate Beckinsale) visits the estate of her in-laws to wait out the colorful rumors about her dalliances circulating through polite society. While ensconced there, she decides to secure a husband for herself and a future for her eligible-but-reluctant daughter, Frederica. In doing so, she attracts the simultaneous attentions of the young, handsome Reginald DeCourcy, the rich and silly Sir James Martin, and the divinely handsome, but married, Lord Manwaring, complicating matters severely. Playing at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., Friday-Wednesday, July 8-13, and at 3 p.m., Thursday, July 14.
Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and has been played since 1877. It is considered to be the most prestigious of all the four Grand Slams. This is the only tournament that is still played on the sport’s original surface — grass. Women’s finals: 9 a.m., Saturday, July 9; men’s finals: 9 a.m., Sunday, July 10. This is a free event.
