Happenings
This week we have our final conversation for 2016 in our Talking Art in Maine series. If you’ve never had a chance to join us for one of these talks, don’t miss it. They are a pleasure. And, in this season of political drama, we open a political documentary that includes a number of players in the current political landscape and won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. It is also already being spoken of as a top contender for this year’s Oscar.
‘Love & Friendship’ (PG; 1 hour, 34 minutes)
A delightful period drama adapted from a novel by Jane Austen. Beautiful young widow Lady Susan Vernon visits the estate of her in-laws to wait out the colorful rumors about her dalliances circulating through polite society. While ensconced there, she decides to secure a husband for herself and a future for her eligible-but-reluctant daughter, Frederica. In doing so, she attracts the simultaneous attentions of the young, handsome Reginald DeCourcy, the rich and silly Sir James Martin, and the divinely handsome, but married, Lord Manwaring, complicating matters severely. Final screening at 3 p.m., Thursday, July 14.
Talking Art in Maine: Intimate Conversations
Our final Talking Art in Maine live interview for 2016, with host Jane Dahmen, features William Wegman, an American artist best known for creating series of compositions involving dogs, primarily his own Weimaraners in various costumes and poses. This free event will take place at 7 p.m., Thursday, July 14.
‘Weiner’ (R; 1 hour, 36 minutes)
Sexts, lies, and Carlos Danger: watch the wildest political meltdown in recent history as it unfolds. It’s 2013 and Anthony Weiner — still reeling from the sex scandal that ended his political career two years earlier — is back in the spotlight as he mounts an audacious comeback campaign for New York City mayor. But it’s not long before history repeats itself and new sexting allegations leave Weiner and his aides scrambling to contain the damage. Granted unfettered access to the candidate and his campaign, filmmakers Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg capture a jaw-dropping, behind-the-scenes look at the political machine as it breaks down. Plays at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., Friday-Wednesday, July 15-20, and at 3 p.m., Thursday, July 21.

“The Audience” reunites writer Peter Morgan and Academy Award-winning actress Helen Mirren following their collaboration on the critically acclaimed movie sensation “The Queen” in this multiple award-winning performance by one of today’s greatest actors. Plays at 7 p.m., Thursday, July 21.
