Happenings
With Theresa May taking over as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, now is the ideal time to imagine what her meetings with the Queen must be like. There is no better way to picture them than by watching Helen Mirren portray Elizabeth II through various stages in her life and various prime ministers in this week’s encore screening of “The Audience.” Then beat the summer heat by enjoying some cool music with Yo-Yo Ma, in “The Music of Strangers,” in the cool air conditioning of Lincoln Theater.
‘Weiner’ (R; 1 hour, 36 minutes)
Sexts, lies, and Carlos Danger: watch the wildest political meltdown in recent history as it unfolds. It’s 2013 and Anthony Weiner — still reeling from the sex scandal that ended his political career two years earlier — is back in the spotlight as he mounts an audacious comeback campaign for New York City mayor. But it’s not long before history repeats itself and new sexting allegations leave Weiner and his aides scrambling to contain the damage. Granted unfettered access to the candidate and his campaign, filmmakers Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg capture a jaw-dropping, behind-the-scenes look at the political machine as it breaks down. Final screening: 3 p.m., Thursday, July 21.
NT Live Encore Series: ‘The Audience’
For 60 years, Queen Elizabeth II has met with each of her 12 prime ministers in a private weekly meeting. This meeting is known as The Audience. No one knows what they discuss, not even their spouses. From the old warrior Winston Churchill, to the Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair, and David Cameron, the Queen advises her prime ministers on all matters both public and personal. Through these private audiences, we see glimpses of the woman behind the crown and witness the moments that shaped a monarch. Winner of three Tony Awards and two Olivier Awards, National Theatre Live’s smash-hit broadcast of the original West End production of “The Audience” — featuring Helen Mirren’s multi-award-winning performance as Queen Elizabeth II — returns for an encore screening at 7 p.m., Thursday, July 21.
