Happenings
Along with two delightful films this week, Lincoln Theater has its last special broadcast of July — a star-studded celebration of William Shakespeare featuring some of the world’s greatest actors each giving a separate take on how to say “To be or not to be.” Audience members will find themselves laughing throughout this truly once-in-a-lifetime event, captured live on the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.
‘Music of Strangers’ (PG-13; 1 hour, 36 minutes)
From the director of the Oscar-winning documentary “20 Feet from Stardom” and the critically acclaimed “Best of Enemies,” the new film “The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble” tells the extraordinary story of the renowned international musical collective created by legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The feature-length documentary follows this group of diverse instrumentalists, vocalists, composers, arrangers, visual artists, and storytellers as they explore the power of music to preserve tradition, shape cultural evolution, and inspire hope. Final screening at 3 p.m., Thursday, July 28.
RSC presents ‘Shakespeare Live!’
Recorded live at the Royal Shakespeare Company on April 23, 2016, “Shakespeare Live!” features performances of some of the greatest dramatic scenes ever written, played by some of our greatest actors, as well as songs, comedy, dances, and music celebrating Shakespeare’s legacy. Featuring Benedict Cumberbatch, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Helen Mirren, and more. Playing at 7 p.m., Thursday, July 28. Tickets available at the door.
‘Maggie’s Plan’ (R; 1 hour, 38 minutes)
Rebecca Miller’s film is a sharp, genial comedy about Maggie, a young New Yorker (Greta Gerwig) who falls in love and starts a family with an older man (Ethan Hawke), after which things get complicated. Miller has a sharp ear for emotional foibles, and the cast is in good form, in particular Julianne Moore as Maggie’s rival, a Danish professor. Playing at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., Friday-Thursday, July 29-Aug. 4.
