Summer calls for suspense, thrillers, spies, and intrigue – all of which can be found in “Our Kind of Traitor,” the film opening Friday, Aug. 12 and based on the novel by one of the greatest spy novelists of our time, John le Carre. The evening before that we have our annual theater celebration to which the entire community is invited. Please join us.
‘Genius’ (PG; 1 hour, 44 minutes)
“Genius,” a stirring drama about the complex friendship and transformative professional relationship between the world-renowned book editor Maxwell Perkins (who discovered F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway) and the larger-than-life literary giant Thomas Wolfe. Starring Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, Jude Law, and Laura Linney. Final screening at 3 p.m., Aug. 11.
Lincoln Theater annual meeting, with Kate Aldrich
Lincoln Theater’s yearly membership meeting, open to members and nonmembers, will take place at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 11. This year’s meeting, with catering by King Eider’s Pub, will include a conversation with acclaimed mezzo-soprano and Damariscotta native Kate Aldrich. Doors, including those to the newly renovated staircase, will open at 6:30 p.m. for this free event.
‘Our Kind of Traitor’ (R; 1 hour, 47 minutes)
“Our Kind of Traitor” is adapted from the John le Carre novel of the same name. While on holiday in Marrakech, an ordinary English couple, Perry (Ewan McGregor) and Gail (Naomie Harris), befriend a flamboyant and charismatic Russian, Dima, who unbeknownst to them is a kingpin money launderer for the Russian mafia. When Dima asks for their help to deliver classified information to the British secret service, Perry and Gail get caught in a dangerous world of international espionage and dirty politics. Playing at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., Friday-Wednesday, Aug. 12-17, and at 3 p.m. only on Thursday, Aug. 18.
Jazz Babies: Lincoln Academy benefit concert
Lincoln Academy alumnus and Damariscotta native Bob Page, along with his Jazz Babies bandmates, will be featured during a special performance at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 18 to benefit Lincoln Academy in Newcastle. For additional information, check out lincolnacademy.org or call 563-3599.
