Happenings
The fall weather is finally here, and with it a great crop of new and exciting movies. The theater’s October calendar is complete and now available. Along with numerous special events — Pumpkinfest celebrations, the launch of the new Met season, a new performance from our kids at Y-Arts, and more from the National Theatre Live — our films this month include “Equity” (R), “Little Men” (PG), “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years” (NR), “Sully” (PG-13), and “Hell or High Water” (R). As the nights get colder, com
e to Lincoln Theater and warm up with some great entertainment.
‘Florence Foster Jenkins’ (PG-13; 1 hour, 50 minutes)
“Florence Foster Jenkins” is based on the true story of Florence Foster Jenkins, a New York heiress who dreamed of becoming an opera singer, despite having a terrible singing voice. The director, Stephen Frears, keeps things light in this treatment of the story of the famously bad singer and a 1944 concert she gave at Carnegie Hall. Meryl Streep plays the singer in question and seems to relish the job of assaulting our eardrums. Simon Helberg, portraying her pianist, really makes the movie with his understated reactions to her off-key howls. Also starring Hugh Grant. Final screenings at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 29.
‘Equity’ (R; 1 hour, 40 minutes)
“Equity” is a tightly wound boardroom thriller. Directed by Meera Menon from a script by Amy Fox, it casts a furious, unsentimental eye on the challenges facing women in and around the financial industry. Anna Gunn is excellent as an investment banker bumping her head on the glass ceiling as a younger colleague (Sarah Meghan Thomas) and an old friend (Alysia Reiner) pursue their own complicated career agendas. Playing at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 30; Sunday, Oct. 2; and Wednesday, Oct. 5; and at 7 p.m. only, Saturday, Oct. 1.
