Happenings
Just in time for Halloween, the theater is pleased to present an encore showing of “Frankenstein,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch. This is followed up by a good ol’-fashioned Western (when was the last time you saw one of those?), and the launch of our new, free Stories to Screen series, with a classic tale starring a classic actress, Dame Maggie Smith.
NT Live Encore: ‘Frankenstein’ (2 hours, no intermission)
This thrilling production features Benedict Cumberbatch (BBC’s “Sherlock,” “The Imitation Game”) and Jonny Lee Miller (CBS’s “Elementary,” “Trainspotting”). It returns in an encore broadcast just in time for Halloween. Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered Creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal. Screens at 2 and 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 27.
‘Hell or High Water’ (R; 1 hour, 42 minutes)
Texas brothers — Toby (Chris Pine), and Tanner (Ben Foster) — come together after years divided to rob branches of the bank threatening to foreclose on their family land. For them, the hold-ups are just part of a last-ditch scheme to take back a future that seemed to have been stolen from under them. Justice seems to be theirs, until they find themselves on the radar of Texas Ranger Marcus (Jeff Bridges) looking for one last grand pursuit on the eve of his retirement. Playing at 2 and 7 p.m., Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Oct. 28, 29, and 30, and Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 2 and 3.
Stories to Screen: ‘The Secret Garden’ (G)
Welcome to our first in a series of free family classics, presented in partnership with Skidompha Public Library. Maggie Smith stars in this film version of the Frances Hodgson Burnett story, often considered one of the best children’s books of the 20th century. Free copies of the book are available for pickup at the library prior to the screening and will also be available at the theater on the day of the showing. All are invited to this free event at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 29.

A neurotic pet therapist, Matilda (Jennifer True), mediates the conflict. Performances are at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 18; 2 and 7:30 p.m., Saturday Nov. 19; and 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 20.
