HappeningsAs Barry Hertz of The Globe and Mail put it, “Although the likes of Blythe Danner and Lily Tomlin have recently headlined films, it’s rare to find a woman over the age of 50 (or, really, 35) top-lining her own movie – and even more unlikely for that film to center on said woman’s sexual desires. Yet against all odds, here is ‘Hello, My Name Is Doris,’ a sharp dramedy focusing on the romantic stirrings of a lonely office worker, played with considerable wit and verve by the 69-year-old Sally Field.” She’s come a long way since “The Flying Nun.” Don’t miss her.

A self-help seminar inspires a sixty-something woman to romantically pursue her younger coworker. Starring Sally Field, this film will play at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., Friday, May 6 and Sunday, May 8; 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Saturday, May 7; and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, May 11 and 12. (Note the later start time on Saturday night, May 7 due to the running of the Kentucky Derby.)

 

Where to Invade Next (R; 1 hour, 50 minutes)To show what the United States can learn from rest of the world, director Michael Moore playfully visits various nations in Europe and Africa as a one-man “invader” to take their ideas and practices for the U.S. Whether it is Italy with its generous vacation time allotments, France with its gourmet school lunches, Germany with its industrial policy, Norway and its prison system, Tunisia and its strongly progressive women’s policy, or Iceland and its strong female presence in government and business, Moore discovers there is much that Americans should emulate. Final showings of this film will take place at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Thursday, May 5.

 

The Kentucky Derby Live (2 minutes)“The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” and the first leg of the U.S. Triple Crown, the 2016 Kentucky Derby continues the tradition that has seen the race run every consecutive year since 1875. Mint juleps will be available to purchase from King Eider’s Pub. This free event will take place on Saturday, May 7. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with post time at 6:24 p.m.

 

The American Nurse (Documentary; 1 hour, 21 minutes)In honor of National Nurses Week, the public is invited to a discussion and screening of this important documentary at 6 p.m., Monday, May 9. Free for RN/CNA/high school students; all others, $5 at the door.

 

YMCA annual meetingThe Central Lincoln County YMCA has invited its 2,200 members to its annual meeting at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 10. The event is also open to the entire community, which includes program participants, volunteers, key stakeholders, donors, and community partners.
