Lincoln Academy alumnus and Damariscotta native Bob Page, along with his Jazz Babies bandmates, will be featured during a special performance to benefit Lincoln Academy at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 18, at the Lincoln Theater, 2 Theater St., Damariscotta. General admission tickets are $25.
Page is one of a rare breed of piano players still going strong today. Influenced by such greats as Fats Waller, Otis Spann, and Professor Longhair, he manages to bring his audiences a distinctive style of music that is unmistakably his own.
Known for his heavy left hand and versatility of style, Page has played since the 1960s, opening for such acts as Muddy Waters, John Hammond, Albert King, and Mose Allison. He learned his craft playing as a sideman with Chuck Berry, James Cotton, Maria Muldaur, The Georgia Satellites, and many more. He has toured extensively in Scandinavia, Europe, and the Caribbean; released six CDs; and twice been nominated for a Grammy. In 2012, he wrote a song that was featured in Clint Eastwood’s movie “Trouble With the Curve.”
Dedicated to preserving traditional American music, Page will be joined by four of the best jazz performers ever produced in this region: Lincoln Academy alumni Dave Page on drums and Jack Tukey on bass, Barney Balch on trombone, and Lefty McAuslin on sax.
This group, the Jazz Babies, has brought lively, solid entertainment to jazz fans in this area for many years.
