Members of the public are invited to come and celebrate the wonderful Irish heritage that was instrumental in the formation of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Newcastle on Friday, March 17. As in years past, the Shamrocks will be hosting a traditional corned beef dinner with all the usual side dishes, including home-baked Irish soda breads and desserts in Cheverus Hall on the grounds of the church, located at 380 Academy Hill Road, Newcastle. Roast chicken will be an option at this dinner, which will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15 each for adults, $8 for children under 12 years of age, or $40 for a family.
The dinner will once again feature performances by the Murphy Family, as well as by John Reinhardt. Join in the fun and sing along to traditional Irish songs. Raffles will include two gift baskets as well as a Lucky Shamrock Lottery.
In addition to the celebration, the History Project of St. Patrick will present a preview exhibit of artifacts and memorabilia celebrating the life of Bishop Jean Lefebvre de Cheverus. In 1876, he was invited to come to Boston and assist with ministering to the Native Americans. Cheverus frequently visited the few Catholic families who settled in Bristol and Newcastle. As the population of Catholics grew, Cheverus offered the spiritual inspiration for the construction of “a good brick church,” the church of St. Patrick that still stands today.
Tickets will be available after all Masses on March 11 and 12 or by calling Lynn Maloney at 798-2831). Tickets will not be available at the door.
May the Irish hills caress you.
May her lakes and rivers bless you.
May the luck of the Irish enfold you.
May the blessings of Saint Patrick behold you.
