Through an imagery-filled slideshow, one will be introduced to what horticultural therapy is and how it is practiced at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens within the universally accessible Lerner Garden of the Five Senses.
This presentation, hosted by the Waldoboro Community Garden Club, will be at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8 at the Broad Bay Congregational Church, at 941 Main St. in Waldoboro.
Registered horticultural therapist Garron Dorr will explain the principles of horticultural therapy, the elements of horticultural therapy, and how it comes to fruition in the active program produced and managed at the gardens with groups and individual participants.
Dorr will discuss how to become a horticultural therapist, garden-based and customized activities, ergonomic tools, and the garden features that can be applied in one’s garden space.
Dorr assists in the development and operations of the horticultural therapy program while managing the native plant gardens at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens’ Bosarge Family Education Center. With a bachelor’s degree in communication from Portland State University in Oregon, as well as an associate’s in horticulture from Southern Maine Community College, he’s completed a certificate in horticultural therapy from the Horticultural Therapy Institute.
Trained to utilize plant and human sciences to achieve treatment goals for individuals, Dorr is passionate about the therapeutic benefits of the natural world that are applied to participants of horticultural therapy.
