From 10:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Aug. 24, teacher-naturalist Fran Ludwig will share her knowledge about the life cycle of the monarch butterfly. During this Beachcombers’ Rest Nature Center workshop, participants will learn how to raise a monarch from an egg and feed it before bidding it “adios” as it journeys to Mexico. This is a hands-on workshop with live specimens and will include a look at the butterfly garden just inside the entrance to Pemaquid Beach Park that was planted by Pemaquid Watershed Association in 2009. This workshop is best for children ages 7 and up, and children under age 8 need to be accompanied by an adult. The workshop is free, but participants must pay the town’s admission fee to the park.
Beachcombers’ Rest Nature Center is a collaboration between the Bristol Parks and Recreation Commission and Pemaquid Watershed Association, a volunteer-based, membership-supported nonprofit organization that has been conserving the natural resources of the Pemaquid Peninsula region since 1966. To reach Beachcombers’ Rest Nature Center from Damariscotta, take Bristol Road/Route 130 about 12 miles. Take the first right onto Snowball Hill Road. Travel nine-tenths of a mile and one will see the sign for the entrance to Pemaquid Beach Park on the left. Workshop participants should gather in the community room on the right side of the park pavilion building. This program will be cancelled if weather is inclement since Pemaquid Beach Park closes on bad-weather days; call 677-2754 for information about the park.
