The Nobleboro Historical Center is open every Saturday in July and August from 1:30-4:30 p.m. and a docent will be there to help. The center’s building is the old Hawthorne schoolhouse from West Neck Road that was used from the mid-1800s until the 1930s; school desks and books are set up in front of the original blackboard. Currently on display are lovely 1800s dresses worn by local people, children’s toys, navigation instruments, ice-cutting tools, a local cobbler’s bench with shoes and soles, and artifacts from the voyages of Capt. Hopkins. Also on display are Native American artifacts, as well as the daggers and clubs of the local Order of the Redmen, a now politically incorrect but interesting men’s social organization that honored Native Americans.
The society has extensive genealogical materials about local families for those who are pursuing their family history. There is historical information about many local buildings and other miscellaneous topics. Maps of 1813 and 1857 Nobleboro are available for sale, along with a map locating the 85 town cemeteries and additional information about each cemetery. There are publications about Nobleboro’s history, veterans, and the First Nobleboro Baptist Church at the center. For a full list of publications and materials, go to nobleborohistoricalsociety.org/forsale.shtml.
The Nobleboro Historical Center is also open by appointment by contacting Mary Sheldon, president, at 563-5376 or sheldon@tidewater.net. The center is located at 198 Center Street, directly in front of Nobleboro Central School.
