It is time once again for the annual Souper Bowl at the Southport town hall on Monday, Jan. 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sponsored by the Southport Memorial Library Aides, the luncheon is free and open to the public.
People are encouraged to join friends and neighbors for this convivial midwinter gathering on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Southport’s “souper” cooks will dish up more than 20 varieties of soups and chilies, accompanied by homemade corn bread, biscuits, and rolls. Seconds and thirds are encouraged, and soups will be available for a small donation to take home at the end of the luncheon. Attendees should bring their own containers or use the disposable ones available at the checkout counter.
Past diners have often asked for recipes for the soups, breads, and desserts served at the Souper Bowl luncheon. The Southport Memorial Library Aides listened, and collected many of those recipes into their new cookbook. “Southport Chefs” is a collection of recipes, many of them from offerings at past Souper Bowls, on sale at this year’s luncheon for only $7. Pick one up, or buy two or three as gifts for friends. All proceeds go towards improving the nonfiction section in the children’s room at Southport Memorial Library.
The Southport Town Hall is located on Route 27, two miles from the Southport Bridge. Plenty of parking is available. For more information, call the library at 633-2741.
