Tops’l Farm, a Waldoboro farm retreat and glamping venue, announced its first public event of the 2018 season, its first annual Sugar Shack Supper, celebrating the heritage and flavors of Maine maple. The event will take place on Saturday, March 24 from 4-9 p.m. Dinner service will begin at 6 p.m.
“I grew up tapping trees and boiling sap on our family farm in Montville,” said owner Sarah Pike, whose family had one of Maine’s first certified organic farms in Maine. “Tromping through the woods, collecting the sap, and watching it change into our own pancake-ready syrup was a true signal of spring. Well, that and, of course, mud season.”
Pike’s desire to continue this tradition in at Tops’l Farm has always been in the plan, and this year will mark the first season of maple syruping on the property.
“As new property owners, we have a desire to get to know our land a bit more intimately, and tapping trees will certainly allow for this,” Pike said. “We are excited to open the doors to our new event space to the community for our first Sugar Shack Supper. March is a great time for a cabin fever reliever!”
The Sugar Shack Supper was inspired by a meal that Pike and her husband, Josh, experienced in the outskirts of Montreal at renowned chef Martin Picard’s Cabane a Sucre. “That meal has remained with me for many years,” Pike said. “It was a combination of the amazing food, the experience of the countryside location, and, of course, the meal celebrating humble winter flavors with maple syrup.”
Tops’l Farm is collaborating with local chef Shane McGarvey and his team from Harvest Moon Catering for the food for the five-course family-style meal. Harvest Moon is known for its open-fire cookery with Maine ingredients and has created a custom menu for the Sugar Shack Supper. A peek at some of the menu items includes: Brined & Grilled Cabbage with Pork Links & Sour Pickles, Mussels Poutine, and, of course, Maple Pie.
Tops’l Farm plans for this meal to be an annual event, and will offer bus service from Portland, Maine as an option for those not local to Waldoboro. Tickets are $65 per person, excluding tax, tip, and beverages. More information and ticket sales can be more can be found at the farm website topslfarm.com/farmevents.
