“The Lobster” is playing through Thursday, June 30, followed by “Genius,” starting Friday, July 1 at The Harbor Theatre.
In a dystopian near future, single people, according to the laws of The City, are taken to The Hotel, where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in 45 days or are transformed into beasts and sent off into The Woods. That is the premise of the critically acclaimed and multi-award-winning film, “The Lobster,” the first English language film by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos.
Steven Rea, reviewing for The Philadelphia Inquirer, describes “The Lobster as “what would happen if Wes Anderson set about doing Franz Kafka, with a hefty dash of George Orwell thrown into the mix: surreal, comic, sad, strange, beautiful, sublime.” “The Lobster” has won numerous awards, including the Jury Prize at Cannes Film Festival.
“The Lobster” stars Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Jessica Barden, Olivia Colman, Ashley Jensen, Ariane Labed, Angeliki Papoulia, John C. Reilly, Lea Seydoux, and Michael Smiley. It is rated R and plays at 7 p.m., Thursday, June 30.
From Academy Award-nominated screenwriter John Logan (“Gladiator,” “The Aviator,” “Hugo,” “Skyfall”) and acclaimed Tony Award-winning director Michael Grandage in his feature film debut, comes “Genius,” a stirring drama about the complex friendship and transformative professional relationship between the world-renowned book editor Maxwell Perkins (who discovered F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway) and the larger-than-life literary giant Thomas Wolfe. Based on the biography “Max Perkins: Editor of Genius,” by A. Scott Berg, “Genius” stars Colin Firth as Perkins; Jude Law as Wolfe; Nicole Kidman as Aline Bernstein, a costume designer sharing a tumultuous relationship with Wolfe; Laura Linney as Louise Perkins, Max’s wife and a talented playwright; Guy Pearce as F. Scott Fitzgerald; and Dominic West as Ernest Hemingway.
“Genius,” rated PG-13, plays at 7 p.m., Friday-Thursday, July 1-7, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 3.
