“Weiner” is playing through Thursday, June 23, followed by black comedy “The Lobster,” starting Friday, June 24 at The Harbor Theatre.
Former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner (married to Huma Abedin, longtime personal aide to Hillary Clinton), still reeling from the sex scandal that ended his political career two years earlier, makes a catastrophic race for mayor of New York City in 2013. This is the backdrop for the fascinating behind-the-scenes documentary “Weiner.” Sexts, lies, and “Carlos Danger”: it’s 2013 and Anthony Weiner is in the spotlight as he mounts an audacious comeback campaign for New York City mayor. But it’s not long before history repeats itself and new sexting allegations leave Weiner and his aides scrambling to contain the damage. Granted unfettered access to the candidate and his campaign, filmmakers Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg capture a jaw-dropping, behind-the-scenes look at the political machine as it melts down.
Rolling Stone describes “Weiner” as “mind-blowing … one of the best documentaries ever made about a political scandal.”
“Weiner,” rated R, plays at 7 p.m., Thursday, June 23.
In a dystopian near future, single people, according to the laws of The City, are taken to The Hotel, where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in 45 days or are transformed into beasts and sent off into The Woods. That is the premise of the critically acclaimed and multi-award-winning film “The Lobster,” the first English language film by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos.
Steven Rea, reviewing for The Philadelphia Inquirer describes “The Lobster” as “what would happen if Wes Anderson set about doing Franz Kafka, with a hefty dash of George Orwell thrown into the mix: surreal, comic, sad, strange, beautiful, sublime.” “The Lobster” has won numerous awards, including the Jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
“The Lobster” stars Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Jessica Barden, Olivia Colman, Ashley Jensen, Ariane Labed, Angeliki Papoulia, John C. Reilly, Lea Seydoux, and Michael Smiley. It is rated R and plays at 7 p.m., Friday-Thursday, June 24-30, as well as at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 26.
