Woody Allen’s “Cafe Society” plays through Thursday, Sept. 1, followed by “Pete’s Dragon,” with Robert Redford, this week at The Harbor Theatre.
Set in the 1930s, Allen’s bittersweet romance “Cafe Society” follows Bronx-born Bobby Dorfman (Jesse Eisenberg) to Hollywood, where he falls in love, and back to New York, where he is swept up in the vibrant world of high-society nightclub life. Centering on events in the lives of Bobby’s colorful Bronx family, the film is a glittering valentine to the movie stars, socialites, playboys, debutantes, politicians, and gangsters who epitomized the excitement and glamour of the age.
With Jeannie Berlin, Steve Carell, Jesse Eisenberg, Blake Lively, Parker Posey, Kristen Stewart, Corey Stoll, and Ken Stott.
“Cafe Society” is rated PG-13. It plays nightly at 7 p.m., through Thursday Sept. 1.
“Pete’s Dragon” is Walt Disney Studios tale of Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford), a woodcarver, who delights local children with stories of a mysterious dragon that lives deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. His daughter Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard) believes these are just tall tales, until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley), a 10-year-old orphan who says he lives in the woods with a giant, friendly dragon. With help from a young girl named Natalie (Oona Laurence), Grace sets out to investigate if this fantastic claim can be true.
Writing for Variety, Peter Debruge describes “Pete’s Dragon” as “one of the year’s most delightful movie-going surprises, a quality family film that rewards young people’s imaginations and reminds us of a time when the term ‘Disney movie’ meant something.”
“Pete’s Dragon” is rated PG. It plays at 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Sept. 2 and 3, and at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 4.
The theater will be closed from Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 5 through Wednesday, Sept. 7.
