On Saturday, March 9, Ocean Blue Fitness in Damariscotta will be one of over 30 gyms nationwide that will be raising money to find a cure for leukemia and lymphoma at a workout and Cocktails for a Cure event. There will be two different workouts to choose from at either 2 p.m. or 3 p.m., then from 4:30-7 p.m., Hawks House Inn will host cocktails, gourmet hors d’oeuvres, and desserts.
Ocean Blue Fitness has joined a fellow gym owner, Benjamin Fogel, to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to find cures for blood cancer.
“We are so excited to be part of my friend Ben’s Man of the Year Campaign for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society,” said Jessica Daly, the fitness center’s owner. “Ben is a former Olympian bobsledder and a great athlete. He was diagnosed with large granular lymphocytic in 2014 and is now thankfully in remission. We are working to raise as much as possible between March 5 and May 18. Every dollar we raise counts as one vote for Ben.”
The candidate whose team tallies the most votes earns the prestigious title of Man or Woman of the Year.
All donations will go directly to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and help to fund therapies and treatments that are saving lives. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society credits the financial support from people as being responsible for the blood cancer advancements that have doubled, tripled, and in some cases quadrupled the survival rate for some blood cancers. Many Leukemia and Lymphoma Society-supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients, but are also now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers and are in clinical trials for patients with lung, brain, breast, pancreatic, and prostate cancers.
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society-funded drugs like targeted therapies and immunotherapies are now saving thousands of lives every day.
“I’m really looking forward to being part of this nationwide event with gym owners from around the country coming together to raise money for cure.” said Daly, expressing thanks to local support and sponsorship. “Hawks House Inn, located at 349 State Route 129 in Walpole, is a perfect setting and Steve Hawks will be serving gourmet hors d’oeuvres and desserts.”
The Senior Workout for a Cure is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be a fun-filled lower-impact workout. Metabolic Mania Workout for a Cure, a higher-intensity workout, will follow at 3 p.m. All donations will go directly to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Everyone is invited to participate in some fun, approachable fitness prior to gathering for food and drink festivities.
To sign up, contact Ocean Blue Fitness at 563-2668 or info@oceanbluefitness.com. The suggested donation for the workout is $30, the cocktail party is $50, and the combo workout and cocktail party is $70.
