Ada M. Howes, 93, of South Gardiner, passed away on March 16 as a resident at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta. She was born in Portage Lake on Nov. 23, 1921 to Moses McNally and Carrie Gallup McNally. She graduated from Presque Isle High School and went on to Presque Isle Normal School for teaching. While in Chicago, Ill. she received her bachelor’s degree and Master of Education degrees.
After her education she taught for 42 years. Ada taught in Schiller Park and Lincoln Wood, Ill.; and in Waldoboro. After her retirement in 1985, Ada also worked in a Montessori school and for a nanny service agency. Ada enjoyed traveling, reading, playing cards, watching TV, listening to music, and square dancing. She enjoyed being with friends and family.
She enjoyed being part of the Mt. Prospect Club in Illinois and the Senior Citizen’s Club of Gardiner; and while in Randolph, went on excursions with the club. Ada was a member of the Illinois Teachers Association and attended the South Gardiner Baptist Church while in Maine.
Ada was preceded in death by her son, Dwight Howes; parents, Moses and Carrie McNally; and siblings, Louisa Gould, Edna McLain, and Willard McNally.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Smith and husband Jimmy of East Lynn, W. Va.; granddaughters, Beverly Radcliffe of Indiana, and Cassandra and Margaret Howes of Illinois; grandsons, Billy Bowling of West Virginia and Jay Smith of Indiana; great-granddaughters, Chelsea Flowers of Indiana, Gabriel Bowling of West Virginia, Shaelea Alexander of Indiana, and Emma and Ava Smith of Indiana; great-grandson, Develin Bowling of West Virginia; great-great-granddaughters, Rylee Kennedy and Kylin Flowers, both of Indiana; brother, Frederick McNally of Jefferson; sisters, Ethel Ann Olson of Alaska, Elizabeth Poland of Medomak, and Sandra Smith of South Gardiner; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, one may give to a charity of your choice in Ada’s memory.
A spring service honoring Ada’s life will be announced later.
