Alexander “Sandy” Smith, 62, of Union, passed away peacefully July 18 after a brave and heroic fight with cancer.
Sandy was born Jan. 21, 1948 in Rockland, the son of Norman and Mary Farris Smith, and is a graduate of Union High School, class of 1966, and Southern Maine Technical College with a degree in Electronics in 1968.
Starting out in the newly developing field of electronics technician, Sandy worked in several states and the Caribbean over the span of his career. The majority of his working years were with the Mosler Safe Co., but more recently he had become an independent contractor. He loved how his job took him all over the state to work on bank vaults, locks, ATMs, and security systems of all types. Most of all, he enjoyed all the people he encountered each day. Just about every bank in Maine knows Sandy.
He lived life to the fullest and made the most of every opportunity that came his way. He was an outdoorsman and was happiest when hunting, fishing, hiking, floating in his kayak or shooting his muzzle loader.
Everything was a complete adventure to Sandy, and he collected endless stories throughout his days, making him the ultimate storyteller.
He was involved in mamy things, from Masons, Boy Scout leader, Little League coach, Peewee Casketball coach, 4H leader, Union Town Planning Board member, and had served as president of the Knox County Fish & Game Club. For the past 20 years, he had become involved with the Ancient Ones, a pre-1840s living history group. He relished dressing up in authentic period dress and participating in the activities of that time period.
Sandy looked forward to the encampments held twice a year called “rendezvous.”
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Deborah Smith of Union; children, Jessica Nelson and husband Jeff, Erin Payson and husband Matt, both of Union, Christienne Jones and husband Ricky of Thomaston, and Timothy Brewster of Union; step-daughter, Cheryl Brewster of Windham; grandchildren, Abigail Eliza and Sara Nelson, and Chloe and Rhys Jones; sisters, Donna Eddy and husband Joe and Trina Boyer and husband Mike, both of Clermont, Fla.
